Top Story:  EMR or EHR - Which is it?

Since the HIPAA deadlines have now come and gone, the majority of the government's attention towards medicine in the United States seems to be focused on Healthcare IT and specifically on the relatively new buzzword - 'EHR.'  For those of us who have been in the industry for a number of years, you know that we have been calling the systems designed to digitize medical records - 'EMRs' or 'Electronic Medical Records.'  The term 'Electronic Health Records' seems to be referring to the same thing, but are their fundamental differences between an EMR and an EHR, or are we all just talking about the same thing? More.

 Quote-of-the-Month
"As health information technology systems are developed, not only will the quality of health care delivery improve dramatically, but so will the quality of health care overall. Some have estimated that over 90 percent of the activity spent on delivering health care depends on the exchange of information. With health information technology, we will not only decrease the amount of time it takes to exchange information, but we will greatly increase the accuracy of the information we exchange."
   - Chad Bungard, deputy staff director and chief counsel for the House Government Reform Subcommittee on the Federal Workforce, 04.04.06

EHR Corner:  U.S. Promotes EHR Adoption

In just one of many federal initiatives to promote EHR adoption, CMS is currently funding its network of Quality Improvement Organizations (QIOs) to assist physician offices with the selection and implementation of EHRs.  CMS is paying the consulting fee for QIO consultants and is currently assisting thousands of physician practices around the country.  EHR Resellers should understand this program, assess the fit of their solution, and know and be known by these QIO personnel.  Funny Bones:  Industry Comedy

"It's impossible to get doctors on the phone.  I've tried.  Every so often I call my own office just to see, and I can't get me.  The best I can do is to leave a message, and even then it takes me two or three days to get back to myself."
