Earlier
last month I sat down with JoAnne Connor, one of the principles at MedTek
Solutions, an extremely successful Lytec Reseller out of Arizona. I
was intrigued to find out more about their business as well as a charity
that they have help found.
KB: So how did you guys get
started with SaveOurTroops.com? What can you tell me about that charity?
JC: A program Bill watched about a
year ago, which inspired us to do this non-profit organization called 'Save
our Troops'. The news show spotlighted the troubles families had with
returning soldiers who were wounded and how to care for them after they get
released from the service hospitals.
KB: What events do you have
coming up? How can people help?
JC: We have an event on July 30 - Sunday in AZ to assist Jason's family.
Jason is in the Army National Guard and lives here in Arizona. We are
having this event as well as a silent auction about a week prior to the
event and to end about 2 days after the event. How you can help? You can
donate to Save Our Troops at
www.saveourtroops.com
or
www.saveourtroops.org and
spread the word to everyone you know and/or purchase tickets to the
event on-line or be a sponsor; there are Titanium, Platinum, Gold and Silver

KB: Well, we know how active
you are in the community – which is awesome. Tell me a little bit about your
background.
JC: I have been in healthcare I.T.
all my life. I met Bill about 10 years ago and he too has been in
healthcare I.T. for a very long time as well. We were both working for a
corporation at that time and decided that we try I.T. consulting; get paid
more, be our own bosses, name our own hours and travel. So we did...then we
started to get tired of the traveling and wanted to be home more. We did
not want to be an employee of big corporations so we started MedTek
Solutions with 4 other people.
KB: How did you get started
selling Medical Software?
JC: When we started MedTek
Solutions our visions were not working out so well, and the other partners
wanted out, and Bill and I did not want to give up. So we bought them out
and we started to sell Lytec. A few years ago we started to sell an
Electronic Medical Record solution as well - which is dear to my heart since I had
managed a Medical Records department for years with Cigna Health plan. Bill
and I, having a medical background and receiving suggestions from our users,
have developed our own software to interface with products we sell and
support.
KB: What products and services
do you currently sell? What are your biggest revenue streams?
JC: We sell Lytec, Medinotes e,
Inferfaces for labs, Superbillable and we work with a company that sells
Hardware and networking services. Our services of course are installing and
training on the software we sell.
We have started a VAR program for
Superbillable - electronic superbill that captures charges and payments and
post them automatically into Lytec or Medisoft
We have written a healthtrak system
that tracks your own health - this way when you go to see a doctor, you can
take with you your history of medications, allergies etc...more on this at
www.epracticesoftware.com
Right now our biggest revenue would
be Lytec - EMR coming very close to that and will probably exceed Lytec this
year. We want Superbillable to be our main revenue stream because we are
the makers of that software; therefore we are in control and do not have to
face corporate processes. We also want healthtrak to become the main
revenue source in a few years.
KB: OK, so take me through your core business philosophies? What is your
biggest motivation with your business?
JC: We want to help people - we
want better healthcare. We honestly feel that better use of technology will
provide for better healthcare. Freeing up a provider’s time, so they can
spend more on patient care, utilizing electronic prescribing to avoid drug
interactions or mixed up prescriptions, and electronic charting to limit
medical mistakes in general.
We believe in service as a product
that is more important then the software we sell.
KB: So what are some of your
goals for the next two years?
JC: Funny you should ask, because we
were just outlining that now. We want to have HealthTrak as our main source
of revenue. We want to be exclusively involved with Save Our Troops and
doing more events throughout the United States!
KB: How many clients do you
have? Do you have any interesting or funny client stories that you could
share?
JC: We have about 800 practices
but some are not active. Not really any
funny stories. There are interesting ones like one of my prospects the OFM
was a person I had not seen in 10 years or so - we worked together at Cigna
- so it is a small world out there after all.
KB: What are some of the things
that you have focused on in order to be successful?
JC: We have focused on referrals
from our existing clients. As well as a focus on testimonials and a focus on new business.
KB: What are some of the
things you have found to be ineffective in growing your business?
JC:
Focusing
on the negative; let it go and move on!
